Avignonet-Lauragais is a commune in Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region, which is part of the Sicoval urban community. It is located in Lauragais, a natural region known for its hilly landscapes and cereal fields.

It is located between Toulouse and Castelnaudary, on the border of the Aude department.

History and heritage

Avignonet-Lauragais has a history marked by its strategic role in the Middle Ages. The town has preserved vestiges of its ramparts and its fortified castle. The village was especially affected by the Inquisition and the massacre of 125 inquisitors.

The Notre-Dame-des-Miracles church, in Gothic style (14th-16th centuries), is an emblematic building. The village also has a pepperpot tower from the 13th century.

The Canal du Midi runs alongside the village, with two locks (En Cassan and Emborel) and a small marina (Port-Lauragais).

Avignonet-Lauragais is a stop on the Way of Saint James (Via Tolosa, GR 653).
