History

The village developed around a Benedictine abbey, founded in the 10th century. Camon was fortified in the Middle Ages, due to its strategic position.

The village is part of the country of Olmes, a high place of Cathar tragedy.

Camon Abbey has had a turbulent history, passing through the hands of different religious orders. It was transformed into a priory in the 17th century.
