Tour des Cordeliers Historic Monument in Pamiers

The Cordeliers Tower in Pamiers, listed as a historic monument in 1921, is an important witness to the town's history.

Origin and history

It is the bell tower of a former Cordeliers convent, built between the 15th and 16th centuries.
Inspired by the bell tower of the Cordeliers church in Toulouse, it was completed in 1512.
During the French Revolution, the tower was used as a watchtower.
Only the bell tower and a western wall of the convent have survived to this day.

Architecture

Gothic in style, the tower is built of bricks. It is one of the three bell towers of Pamiers.

Historical significance

The Cordeliers Tower commemorates the presence of the Cordeliers (Franciscan) order in Pamiers and bears witness to the religious conflicts that marked the region. It reflects the town's evolution over the centuries.
