Lake Saint-Ferréol, a reservoir with a rich history between Revel and Vaudreuille

The story begins with Pierre-Paul Riquet, Lord of Bonrepos, who envisioned a comprehensive hydraulic system to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea via the Canal du Midi. While exploring the Montagne Noire massif, he discovered the Laudot Valley and its small, rocky gorge, the perfect location to create what would become the first artificial reservoir in France. Construction lasted five years, from 1667 to 1672, a gamble that paid off, as Lake Saint-Ferréol still exists today, covering 67 hectares, with a perimeter of 4.5 km, a depth of over 32 meters, and holding more than 6 million cubic meters of water.

Discover Riquet's work at the former engineer's house which houses the Reservoir in Revel, a unique site that reveals all the secrets of the creation of the Canal du Midi.
