Located at the foot of the medieval town of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, the Basilica of Saint-Just in Valcabrère is one of the most unique jewels of Pyrenean Romanesque art. It is striking first and foremost for its isolation amidst the fields, but above all for its construction using reused materials. Indeed, the medieval builders drew extensively on the ruins of the nearby Gallo-Roman town, Lugdunum Convenarum, to erect the church. By observing the exterior walls and the bell tower, one can clearly see fragments of sarcophagi, ancient columns, and Roman sculpted stones integrated directly into the masonry, creating a fascinating dialogue between Antiquity and the Christian era.

Inside, the atmosphere is imbued with austere serenity and architectural purity. The chancel, flanked by an apse and two apsidal chapels, houses an impressive 14th-century ciborium (stone canopy) above the tomb of Saints Justus and Pastor. The nave, dark and unadorned, highlights the delicate beauty of the north portal, where four large column-statues welcome visitors.

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, this basilica remains an exceptional testimony to the historical continuity of Occitanie, where each stone seems to tell two stories at once.
