The Notre-Dame-du-Taur church, located in the heart of Toulouse, is a place steeped in history and spirituality. It is located on Rue du Taur, an important axis linking the Place du Capitole to the Saint-Sernin basilica.
A little history
It owes its name to Saint Saturnin, the first bishop of Toulouse, who was martyred in the 3rd century. According to legend, his body, dragged by a bull, fell to pieces on the spot where the church was erected. This story is depicted in a gilded fresco above the altar.
Architecture
Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, the church features a southern Gothic style characteristic of the region. Its facade is recognizable by its bell tower, which blends harmoniously with the buildings on the street.
The church houses a black Virgin, Our Lady of the Rampart, dressed in brocade. The interior, all sobriety, encourages meditation.
Please note, the site is closed for renovations until the end of 2025.
