    • The Labouiche underground river, an unmissable discovery south of Toulouse

It is in Baulou , 6 km from Foix, that the magnificent underground river of Labouiche extends, an hour south of Toulouse. Discovered in 1908, it has been open to the public since the 20th century , much to the delight of young and old alike, who are amazed by these galleries formed in the center of the Earth. Have no fear, you will be accompanied by a passionate guide in a boat floating on the river.

The Labouiche underground river, an unusual visit into the depths of the Earth

In Ariège, in the heart of the Pyrenees, don't miss this extraordinary expedition that takes you on a journey through time. In these underground galleries , prehistoric and Gallo-Roman artifacts were discovered, and your guide for the day will be delighted to share these fascinating stories. This isn't a self-guided tour, as the Labouiche underground river has a unique feature : its mode of transport. You'll explore the magnificent carved limestone rocks by boat, illuminated by soft, warm light in a cave-like atmosphere. Your companion will propel the boat, which can accommodate groups of up to 12 people, providing commentary throughout the tour on the concretions, stalagmites, and stalactites formed over time. Some even have enchanting names like "the unicorn" or "the witch"—keep your eyes peeled so you don't miss them!

The underground river of Labouiche: what you need to know to enjoy this cave in the Pyrenees

If this is your first time going six feet underground, we recommend bringing a sweater or jacket, as the temperature doesn't get warmer than 13°C at a depth of 60 meters. Similarly, be sure to wear good walking shoes so you can descend the 200 steps without falling during the guided tour. Rest assured, most of the effort will be done by your guide, while you'll be comfortably seated in your boat. Allow 1 hour and 15 minutes to take your time asking questions and, above all, to admire the incredible geological diversity found in the underground galleries. Did you know that the Labouiche River is the longest navigable river in Europe ? It's easy to see why the route is 1,500 meters long. With a wooded garden, a large parking area, a shaded picnic area, and a marked trail, it's easy to spend the whole day here. Stop by the gift shop before you leave; they have some lovely souvenirs.
