Welcome to Cathar Country! In the heart of Ariège, the castle of Montségur dominates the valleys and imposes itself on all visitors traveling the roads.
Its picturesque village, typical of mountain constructions, is surrounded by a preserved, natural and protected environment. The village was built with the stones of the castles. The economy is mainly oriented towards crafts and the farmer.
In the Middle Ages, the region was made up of a conglomeration of principalities living under the suzerainty of the powerful Counts of Toulouse. Also appears against Catholicism, a new doctrine: Catharism which does not please Pope Innocent III very much. In a bloody repression in 1244, the castle of Montsegur was besieged by Catholic armies, more than 200 faithful were burned alive. The fortress will be occupied until the end of the 17th century.
