The 7 main castles of the Cathar Country in Ariège

Catharism, a religious movement in Ariège

Catharism is linked to Christianity, since those known as Cathars (called at the time Good Christians, Apostles, or Good Men) condemned the Roman Catholic Church for not respecting the ideals of Christ. Emerging in the mid-12th century, this medieval Christian movement denounced a Church that was too wealthy and tied to the powerful, while the Cathars (the only true disciples of the Apostles) were the only ones to practice absolute poverty and rely on manual labor for their livelihood. Condemnations and warnings were not enough, which explains the beginning of the Crusades. For over 30 years, the inhabitants and lords of southern France clashed with the Cathars, who defended two worlds: the good world, which was God's creation, and the evil world, which was the lower world.

After the Albigensian Crusade, King Louis 9 of France had a series of fortresses built on the southern border, now known as the "Castles of the Cathar Country".

The Château de Montségur, the refuge of the Cathars

Nestled in the heart of nature, a charming mountain village unfolds, its houses huddled together to bask in the sun. Perched atop its hill, the Château de Montségur stands as a testament to history , accessible on foot in 30 minutes from the parking area. Designated a Grand Site Occitanie, it can be explored through guided tours between May and October, but remains open year-round for self-guided visits. Experience a true journey back in time and take the time to admire the breathtaking views of the peaks of the Tarbes massif and the vast plains beyond.
