On the banks of the Garonne River, next to the Pont Neuf, a tall brick structure stands out. This is the Lagand Water Tower, named after Charles Lagand (1722-1789), the king's prosecutor and chapter. He bequeathed 50,000 gold coins to the city for the purification and distribution of drinking water, specifying that these funds were to be used no later than ten years after the death of his wife. Madame Lagand died in 1817, and city officials hastened to find a use for this generous gift. The tower was designed by architect Jean-Antoine Renault, and the hydraulic machine for lifting the water was built by Jean Abadie. Work began in 1821 and was completed in 1825, and since 1829, the structure has supplied water to an extensive network of drinking fountains. In the mid-19th century, the tower's hydraulic system was considered one of the most advanced achievements of the era, but within two decades it had lost its significance. In 1870, the tower was decommissioned, and municipal authorities used it as a warehouse for road workers. In 1974, French photographer Jean Dieused proposed creating a photography gallery in the tower and housing a permanent exhibition. This gallery remains in operation today, and its halls regularly host thematic exhibitions. Next to the Lagan Tower runs the pedestrian Allée Dillon, beginning at the Pont Neuf and ending at the Pont Saint-Michel. By early April, the plane trees planted along the allée were already covered in foliage, filling the air with a soft rustling and freshness.
