Église Notre-Dame de la Daurade Historic Monument in Toulouse

The Church of Our Lady of the Daurade, also known as the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Daurade, is an iconic historical monument in Toulouse. It is located along the banks of the Garonne River, near the Place de la Daurade and the Port de la Daurade, and is adjacent to the School of Fine Arts.

History and evolution

Built on the remains of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Apollo, it was transformed into a church in the 6th century. Its name comes from the gilding (dauradas in Occitan) that adorned the mosaics.
The building has undergone many transformations over the centuries.

Architectural features

The current architecture of the basilica is neoclassical in style, which gives it a majestic and refined appearance. It is distinguished by its imposing façade and its absence of a bell tower.

Cultural and religious significance

The basilica houses the famous Black Madonna, a revered statue that has special significance for the people of Toulouse, especially for pregnant women.
The monumental paintings of the painter Joseph Roques, illustrating the cycle of the life of the Virgin Mary, are also important elements of his artistic heritage.
