The Basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse is a major religious building, both for its history and its architecture. It is considered the largest preserved Romanesque church in Europe.

His story

It was built to house the relics of Saint Saturnin (or Sernin), the first bishop of Toulouse, martyred in the 3rd century.

From the 9th century, it became an important stop on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.

It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela.

Its architecture

The basilica is a masterpiece of Romanesque art, with its Latin cross shape, five naves and characteristic octagonal bell tower. It is remarkable for the richness of its sculpted capitals and decorative elements.

The modifications and additions took place over several centuries, mainly between the 11th and 13th centuries.
