The Saint-Sernin Basilica is an emblematic monument of Toulouse, both for its historical importance and its architectural beauty.

A little history

The Basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse is the largest preserved Romanesque church in Europe, a masterpiece of Romanesque art.
It is dedicated to Saint-Sernin (or Saturnin), the first bishop of Toulouse, martyred in the 3rd century.

In the Middle Ages, it was a major stop on the road to Santiago de Compostela, which contributed to its development and wealth.

It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela.

Architecture

• The Basilica is characterized by its Latin cross plan, with five naves and a transept. Its octagonal bell tower, topped with a spire, is a visual landmark in the Toulouse landscape.
• The interior is richly decorated with sculpted capitals, frescoes and stained glass windows.
• The use of Toulouse brick gives it its particular pink color.
