Complete guide to the Naguille Pond

Naguille Pond

The history of the Naguille pond

Originally a natural pond, it underwent numerous dam constructions starting in the 20th century, becoming today the third largest reservoir in the French Pyrenees and the largest lake in the Ariège region, with a capacity of 43 million cubic meters of water. Needless to say, it's impressive ! You feel tiny in the face of this vast blue expanse stretching out before you, surrounded by greenery and mountains.

A breathtaking hike in Haute-Ariège

You'll need your stamina to climb the 1,000 meters of elevation gain through the forest. Yes, the Naguille pond sits at an altitude of 1,890 meters, enough to make your head spin if you're not prepared. Wear good shoes, as the path can be rocky in places, and bring a light jacket to ward off the chill of the undergrowth. Don't worry, the brisk walk warms you up quickly, and you'll be delighted to reach the top after the climb. The route is an out-and-back hike of about ten kilometers. Depending on your fitness level, it takes an average of 6 hours to complete, but there's nothing stopping you from taking a picnic break overlooking the magnificent lake, which is the main reason for your visit.

Put down your walking sticks and backpack, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy a moment of pure tranquility surrounded by such beauty.

The flora and fauna during the hike

There's nothing more beautiful than watching nature flourish in its natural environment. On the hiking trail, every step holds a surprise: the small forest animals that disappear as you approach, the birdsong that accompanies your climb, and the rustling of leaves in the breeze. The Naguille pond is a natural treasure where chamois, marmots, and birds of prey thrive with the changing seasons. In the reservoir, numerous fish such as brown trout, rainbow trout, and lake trout dabble, while vultures soar overhead, observing the tiny creatures that wriggle beneath their sharp eyes. Look up, and you might just spot a bearded vulture.

What you need to plan for the hike to the Naguille pond

The hike presents a certain challenge with elevation changes and rocky paths, so make sure you have the necessary fitness level before setting off. Above all, remember to wear appropriate footwear, bring a water bottle, a hat if the sun is intense, and hiking poles to help you along. The mountains are a natural environment that can be unpredictable, and the weather unpredictable. Despite the beautiful season, check the day's forecast to avoid being caught in a storm or heavy rain. Otherwise, we'll let you enjoy the magnificent setting of the Naguille pond.

When and how to get there?

The Naguille pond is a natural area open to everyone year-round, so you can choose the best time for your excursion and the perfect moment to admire it. To maximize your chances of hiking in ideal conditions, we recommend going between June and October, when the weather is most often sunny. The hike starts at the Forges d'Orlu parking lot, then continues along the GR (long-distance hiking trail) of the Ax Mountains. Simply follow the "Naguille pond" signs marked with red and yellow blazes, and you're ready for your day.
