    • The Prehistoric Caves of Gargas, an unmissable visit in the Neste Valley

A true sanctuary of the past, the prehistoric caves of Gargas are geological treasures overlooking the Neste d'Aure Valley, between the lower Gargas I cave and the upper Gargas II cave, connected by an artificial tunnel. The only decorated caves in the department open to the public, they invite you on a journey back in time to admire the beauty of prehistoric art.

Sacred ritual, tradition, language, signature… the mystery remains as to the various archaeological treasures found in the Gargas caves. Open your eyes wide to admire engravings, animal paintings, geometric signs, symbols, and more than 200 negative handprints.

The 50-minute guided tour is fascinating and can be continued independently at the Nestploria Digital Interpretation Centre, a vast museum space that unveils the secrets of prehistory. With touchscreens, large digital tables, and immersive or scientific films, it appeals to both children and adults with its incredible digital presentation. Your entrance ticket also grants you access to the permanent exhibition "Explorers of Prehistory" ; be sure to book in advance.

Note: The temperature inside the caves is 11°C, so a sweater or cardigan is recommended to avoid shivering.

The two combined caves are very nice and interesting. The prehistoric art is okay, but compared to many other caves a little underwhelming. The museum however is of high quality.
