Rabastens de Bigorre, gateway to Bigorre, is one of the few royal bastides founded in the Middle Ages, in 1306, on these wooded and marshy lands on the border of the county of Bigorre, by the seneschal Guillaume de Rabastens, local representative of the King of France. It was designed around its square, which plays an important role in the development of the city, with its markets and fairs. Wooden and stone house, Gothic church, convent constitute the bastide which will be burnt down during the wars of religion. Outrages of the past, there remains today only the church and part of the convent.
Near Rabastens de Bigorre, the Benedictine abbey of Saint Sever de Rustan was erected in the 11th century. Rebuilt many times over the centuries, it is now owned by the Hautes-Pyrénées department, which has been restoring it since 2010. The abbey is also famous for its cloister moved in 1890 to the Massey garden in Tarbes. Music concerts and exhibitions punctuate the site's cultural activity.
