Hôtel d'Assézat et de Clémence Isaure Historic Monument in Toulouse

The Hôtel d'Assézat is an iconic historic monument in Toulouse. It is located near Place Esquirol, in the heart of the pink city.

History and architecture

Construction

Built between 1555 and 1562, it is a Renaissance-style mansion, commissioned by Pierre d'Assézat, a wealthy pastel merchant. It was designed by Nicolas Bachelier, one of Toulouse's greatest Renaissance architects.

Developments

The hotel has had several owners and transformations over the centuries. In the 19th century, it was acquired by the city of Toulouse and became the headquarters of learned societies.

Since 1994, it has housed the Bemberg Foundation, which exhibits European works of art from the 14th to the 20th century.

The Hôtel d'Assézat has been listed as a historic monument since 1914.

The Hôtel d'Assézat houses the Clémence Isaure room, the meeting place of the Académie des Jeux Florales.

Clémence Isaure is a legendary figure, associated with the revival of the Floral Games of Toulouse in the 14th century.

Although its historical existence is controversial, it has become a strong symbol of Toulouse culture and poetry.
