  The Compans-Caffarelli Garden is today one of Toulouse's major green spaces, but its history is directly linked to the urban transformations of the 20th century and the redevelopment of a former military site. Originally, the Compans-Caffarelli area was occupied by military barracks, built starting in the 19th century. This district, located near the city center, remained closed for a long time and reserved for strictly military use, with no real public access. In the 1970s, the city launched a vast urban redevelopment project. Military activities were gradually relocated, and the freed-up land offered a rare opportunity to transform this strategic area. Toulouse then decided to create a new, modern district there, combining housing, offices, and public spaces, including a large garden. The Compans-Caffarelli Garden was thus developed within this context, with the aim of creating a relaxing space in the heart of a rapidly changing neighborhood. It is organized around a large body of water and expansive lawns, offering a striking contrast to the surrounding urban landscape. One of the garden's most distinctive features is the Japanese garden, inaugurated in 1981. Inspired by traditional Kyoto gardens, it is designed according to precise aesthetic principles, symbolically showcasing water, rocks, bridges, and vegetation. This garden provides a separate, more intimate space within the park. Over time, the Compans-Caffarelli Garden has become a central hub of Toulouse life. It welcomes walkers, families, and also hosts cultural events and other gatherings. Its location near the convention center and the business district reinforces its role as a transitional space between urban activity and relaxation. Today, the garden retains this dual identity. It is both a legacy of the transformation of a former military site and a modern green space within the city.

  A very beautiful park, especially the Japanese-style corner—we thoroughly enjoyed it. The carp pond and cherry blossoms in April.
