24 hours in Lourdes: discover the sacred city at the foot of the Pyrenees

Lourdes
24 hours in Lourdes: ...

In every corner of the world, there are mystical places that exude intense spirituality. On the Gave de Pau river, at the foot of the Pyrenees, Lourdes is a world-renowned Christian pilgrimage center. It is the fourth holiest Catholic site after the Vatican, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil. As a result, the city attracts 6 million visitors a year : many are devout and come to this holy place to obtain divine favor, atone for their sins, or strengthen their spirituality. Other tourists, non-believers, visit Lourdes to share this emotion and out of simple curiosity for the heritage. In any case, Lourdes leaves no visitor unmoved.

Lourdes

A small town with an extraordinary destiny

In the early 1850s, Lourdes was a modest county seat with 4,135 inhabitants. The town was then merely a stopover for those seeking treatment at the thermal waters of Barèges, Cauterets, Luz-Saint-Sauveur, and Bagnères-de-Bigorre. Its destiny was transformed on February 11, 1858, when the young shepherdess Bernadette Soubirous, then 14 years old, saw a "lady dressed in white" appear eighteen times in the grotto of Massabielle. After asking her name several times, the woman finally answered Bernadette on March 25, in Occitan, "Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou": I am the Immaculate Conception.

Illiterate, Bernadette repeated this phrase, which she didn't understand, on her way to Father Peyramale, who quickly realized that these apparitions were none other than those of the Virgin Mary. Four years later, the apparitions were recognized by the clergy, and Rome accepted the miracle. The sites of these manifestations became places of worship, and crowds of believers from all over the world flocked on pilgrimage to this small village in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

Since then, spectacular healings have been recorded, and the sick are welcomed there every year. Whether one is a believer or not, the religious fervor that reigns here and the monuments erected in honor of the Virgin Mary amaze pilgrims and casual visitors alike in Lourdes.

The sanctuaries of Lourdes

Lourdes
Lourdes

Visiting places of worship is an essential part of any trip to immerse oneself in the culture, meet worshippers, and exchange ideas with them to better understand religions. We chose to visit Lourdes on a Sunday, an important day in the spiritual life of Catholics, and even more so in Lourdes, where several masses are held in the various basilicas, chapels, and grottoes.

Upon arriving in Lourdes, religious fervor is palpable throughout the streets. Walking through the town to reach the sanctuaries, we encounter families, groups of friends, pilgrims, and volunteers from all over the world, all making their way in a friendly, warm, and fraternal atmosphere. Regardless of one's religious affiliation, the visitors' excitement is strongly felt as they cross the Boulevard Rémi Sempé bridge leading to the Saint-Michel Gate at the entrance to the Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes complex comprises five distinct locations.

The Basilica of Saint Pius X is located to the left of the esplanade that leads to the other two buildings. Inaugurated in 1958, this modern reinforced concrete structure is entirely built underground and can accommodate 2,500 worshippers.

Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary

Before us stands the imposing Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in the Romano-Byzantine style. Consecrated in 1901, the basilica opens onto a vast plaza capable of accommodating over 80,000 visitors. Arcades frame three semicircular chapels carved into the rock. One is dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, the second to Saint Bernadette, decorated with a large mosaic on a gold background. Finally, the third is dedicated to Saint Paschal Baylon, a Franciscan friar known as the Patron Saint of Eucharistic Works because he spent hours in ecstatic prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

Further on, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception dominates the entire sanctuary of Lourdes. Consecrated in 1876, it is built on the very site of the apparitions: at the top of the rock of Massabielle and above the crypt where the relics of Bernadette Soubirous are kept and whose walls are covered with ex-votos.

In addition to the three basilicas, pilgrims come to Lourdes to bathe in the sacred pools, hoping for healing through the miraculous spring water. Built starting in 1882, they are located further to the right of the spring. Pilgrims crowd around to collect this blessed water from taps using all kinds of containers.

Finally, the site of the miracle, the grotto where Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin Mary appear to her, is the final destination of the pilgrimage. Perched in the grotto, the statue of the Virgin overlooks the esplanade where hundreds of believers gather for Sunday Mass. It is an unforgettable moment of peace and prayer where religious devotion reaches its peak. Every day, ceremonies, prayers, processions, Stations of the Cross, and vigils enliven the sanctuary.

Leaving the sanctuary, we strolled around the surrounding area and through the town. We found other religious buildings to admire ( the Church of Saint Bernadette, for example), a multitude of souvenir shops, and hotels with majestic architecture, such as the Grand Hotel Moderne, built in 1896, which caught our eye with the elegance of its facades. The second largest hotel city in France after Paris, Lourdes boasts an impressive array of hotels : more than 140 hotels, 12,000 rooms, and 20,000 beds!
